Syllabus

I. Lecture: Lawson Hall, Room 161, 8:00-8:50 M, W, F

  • Textbook: Foundations in Microbiology 8th ed. 2012. By Kathleen P. Talaro, published by McGraw-Hill (available at the campus and Carbondale bookstores).
    • Note: Textbook options include hardbound, unbound (looseleaf) and E-book (online) versions.

II. Laboratory: LSII, Sections 1, 4, 5 and 7 Room 113. Sections 2, 3, 6 and 8, Room 119.

Note: The first day of lab is Tuesday 1-17-12 for sections 5-8 and Wednesday 1-18-12 for sections 1-4. Attendance will be taken.

Sections 1 and 2: 10:00 to 11:50 W and 10:00 to 10:50 F

Sections 3 and 4: 12:00 to 1:50 W and 1:00-1:50 F

Sections 5 and 6: 9:00 to 10:50 Tu and 9:00 to 9:50 Th

Sections 7 and 8: 11:00 to 12:50 Tu and 11:00 to 11:50 Th

  • Elementary Microbiology Lab Manual by John Haddock (only available at Copies 'N' More located at 879 E. Grand Ave., 529-2679)
  • Laboratory supplies: flame resistant lab coat or apron, black Sharpie pen, box of microscope slides (1 box can be shared by 2 students), lens paper (not bibulous paper) and bound lab notebook (e.g. National Blank Book Co. composition book) must also be purchased. Goggles are also recommended for eye protection but are not required.

Try to have the lab manual by the first lab on Tues/Wed. and the manual and supplies by the second lab on Thurs./Fri.


Lecture notes by J. Haddock for Weeks 1-7.

Print the notes for each chapter before the scheduled lecture and bring them to class. This will allow you to listen and pay close attention to the lecture without having to try and write it all down by hand.

Note: Some of the scientific symbols (e.g. alpha a, beta b) and possibly other formatting do not always display correctly when using Netscape Navigatior or Safari to view the lecture notes. Internet Explorer is recommended.

Comprehensive Final Exam

The comprehensive final exam will consist of 40 questions covering lectures delivered for Exams 1, 2, 3 and 4. Keep your exams to study for the final, and look up the correct answers to the questions you missed.


The lecture notes and study guides of the second half of the class (Chapter11 - 25, Instructor: KyuHong Cho) can be found on Blackboard.


Concerning Exams

1. Fill out the scantron sheet, as directed, before you start the Exam.

  • Enter your Name and Section Number only in the correct locations.
  • Do Not put your student ID number on the form!
  • Incorrectly filled out forms may cost you points on your exam score.

2. Exams start at 8:00 am. Be on time. No one will be allowed to take the exam after the first person has finished and left the room (often as early as 8:15 am).

3. Remember that no makeup exams will be given, as outlined in the syllabus.

 

4. Each exam consists of 40 multiple choice questions.
